Inferior Geek
So, you know the old thing about hypocondriacs, "If you've got a headache then they have a braintumor?" So it is with my interests in relationship to Banfennid's interests.
I like Star Wars. She reads the novels.
I like Lord of the Rings. She's a charter member of the fan club.
And so on down the line.
But recently she's taken the cake. She's crossed certain lines and I'm sure it will only get worse from here. So, allow me to take a moment to publicly tease my sweetie.
So, all my life I've never been into comic books. I really never saw much point in them. As I got older I saw even less point in them but I noticed that there were a number of adults, whose opinions I respected, who were still very much into them. And I'd occassionally ask what the big deal was. I'd tell them, "I just don't get the appeal of comics." and the response was almost always the same, "That's because you've never read Sandman."
Well, sometime ago I broke down and bought Volume I of the Sandman Library. And I read through it and thought, "Hey, this is pretty cool," and now I'm about 7/8th of the way through Volume VI. Now, I like these neat "graphic novel" compendiums that have about 8 issues in them and you get a complete story arc you can read at your own pace all in one package. So, I've since read some neat Batman (who's NOT a superhero) stories, a really bizzare black and white psuedo-18th Century semi-Gothic story called The Marquis that I LOVED, and the first volume of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Now, the one thing I STILL don't get about comics, is puchasing monthly issues. First of all, they're fragile, hard to keep track of and just don't store well on your average shelves. Second, they're incomplete. That is, each issue doesn't tell a single story but a part of a story. They're serials that make you wait an ENTIRE month for the next part. So you get one complete story every 6 to 8 months. It boggles the mind that in just six books I've read several YEARS worth of Sandman material. No thank you. I'm too much of a control freak for this. I'll just wait for the compliation so I can read it at my leisure, thanks.
Now this is where I get to tease Banfennid.
Now, she, like me, wasn't a comic person either. After I started reading Sandman she still didn't seem particularly interested, so I really didn't bug her about it. Then she read some of Neil Gaiman's prose and she wanted more of Gaiman's work so she started reading the Sandman stuff. THEN she sees the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen trailor so she goes home and reads that. Okay, I'm cool with this.
But this is where it gets dark, twisted and EVIL. This is where I cross into some alternate reality where things are just surreal and strange.
So we're out and about and suddenly, SHE suggests we swing by our local comic shop. And WHY does she want to do this? Because she wants to pick up an individual *ISSUE*, yes you heard me, *ISSUE* of the second volume of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
And then last night, she takes the cake, when she turns to me and INFORMS me that we're going to ComiCon.
I read "graphic novels." She reads individual issues and goes to CONVENTIONS!
And she wonders why I obsess about roleplaying. It's the only thing I get to be more geeky about.
I am the inferior geek.
